The Alaska Ocean Cluster supports ocean-related entrepreneurship through business incubation and mariculture development.

The purpose of our business incubator is to serve as a catalyst to cultivate and grow scalable, innovative ocean-related businesses in Alaska, with priorities for coastal community economic development and startup or early-stage companies by providing services such as management training, support with business basics, accounting and financial management, access to strategic partners and investors, help with regulatory compliance, and intellectual property management.

Four Elements to Our Business Incubation Model

  1. The Alaska Ocean Cluster, along with our strategic partners, provides an incubator manager who is closely linked to the business community bringing experience, contacts, resources and community presence. The incubator manager will provide business development and support, day-to-day operations and coordination and facilitation of business services to assist startup and young businesses reach their goals. The manager will serve as a facilitator, mentor, coordinator, and colleague for participants.
  2. Business services such as; business plan development, promotional assistance, technical support, and accounting and financial management are core components of our business incubator. Our incubator manager will evaluate the business development stage in which the entrepreneur is operating, and assist in planning, investment, startup, maintenance, and eventual expansion.
  3. The incubator manager and team support entrepreneurs in gaining access to capital by developing partnerships and identifying grants and other funding opportunities. We provide access to our microloan program when businesses reach the proper stage. We also provide access to information and practices on accounting and maintaining cash flow.
  4. To be successful in rural coastal business incubation we believe a regional network approach is crucial for providing support to dispersed populations with limited local markets and a limited field of expert advisors and potential clients. We provide access to developed and effective networks that connect dispersed businesses by providing access to specialized knowledge and services.
